London College of Fashion approaches the issue of sustainability from a unique position.  We believe that the problems that exist represent a great opportunity for designers and our students.  We have made a great start in  embedding issues of sustainability into the fabric of life at LCF. 

LCF have ...

  • introduced MA Fashion and the Environment, the first course of it’s kind
  • set up the trail blazing Centre for Sustainable Fashion
  • held our first Green Week
  • run numerous ‘swishing’ events
  • mounted exhibitions by eco-pioneers Lucy Orta and Helen Storey
  • held our first  International Student Competition focussing on finding new design talent in sustainable fashion design
  • held a two day conference which brought together key opinion formers in the sector
  • and finally been a key delivery partner in the Defra Clothing Action Plan which is a high profile government initiative to change the way the fashion industry does business
     
    ... This is just the beginning.

Having been appointed a ‘London Leader’ for 2009 gives me the opportunity to work with a group of diverse and pioneering individuals working towards the same goal of achieving sustainability within their sector.  Together we can  promote London as a centre for innovation and creativity and lead our global partners and stakeholders in working for a sustainable future.

It is easy to become overwhelmed by the challenges we face but if we work collectively small actions will translate into big shifts in attitude and behaviour; by using fashion as a catalyst we will encourage social and economic change and produce a more sustainable industry that will benefit us all; our students will be central to this transformation.
