The Students’ Union keeps track of attendance at Course Rep training events. You can see what our records say by looking at the Course Rep database.
Having said that, the best way to tell if a Course Rep has attended training is normally to ask them. This can be more helpful than getting a simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’ response, as it’s often useful to find out why a student has not attended training.
Registration is carried out online through the online registration form.
Registration is the only way that the Students’ Union can find out who Course Reps are. We use the information to send targeted reminders, invitations, and updates. We also make the contact information available to other Course Reps and to students.
As soon as they are registered, the Course Reps’ details will appear on the Course Reps database.
While Course Reps are responsible primarily for issues that affect students on their course, each department also seeks to have student representation at higher levels. School Reps (or Faculty Reps, at LCC) are responsible for representing students across their School or Faculty. They are normally appointed by their peers at the first Student & Dean forum of the academic year. However, in some circumstances it is necessary for staff to appoint these higher-level Reps more informally.
School and Faculty Reps sit on the Board of Studies, in addition to their duties as Course Reps. They should be invited to these meetings and receive papers in advance. Ideally, the Board of Studies agenda should have student issues first, so that if students are unable to stay for the whole duration they can still contribute.
You can find out who the appointed School and Faculty Reps are by looking at the Course Reps database.
The Students’ Union offers Course Reps £7.40 to Course Reps who have attended a meeting as part of their role. This is not a payment for their time – it is to cover any travel costs incurred while attending the meeting. A Course Rep can only claim these vouchers once they have been trained.
If the Rep has attended a meeting facilitated by the Students’ Union, such as Course Rep training or a Student & Dean forum, they will normally receive a voucher on the day.
If the Rep has attended a meeting facilitated exclusively by the University, they should fill in a Meeting Report online. The data they submit will be used to make Union campaigns more relevant, and the Union will send them a £7.40 voucher in the post.
The vouchers can be redeemed for cash at Students’ Union shops and bars at High Holborn, London College of Communication, and Chelsea College. We are currently working on a more accessible solution for Reps based at Wimbledon.
